Biomolecular mechanisms of action of ultraviolet irradiation of blood (UVIB)

Ultraviolet irradiation (UVBI) is a method in which blood is exposed to ultraviolet light quanta. This method has been used in medicine for more than 80 years. In 1928, V. Hancock and E. Knott performed the first extracorporeal UVBI treatments on a woman dying of sepsis during childbirth. The volume of irradiated blood was 100-120 ml. The patient recovered.
